We saw people from all over our community and the world join together to make this event possible - and now, we're doing it again. That's right! The South Texas Get Healthy Mega Clinic is coming back to the Rio Grande Valley! The dates are scheduled for June 15th - 18th. We are once again calling for volunteers and generous donations to bring help to our under-served communities.

Dr. Dona Cooper in cooperation with the Cooper Wellness
Center
and the RGV Food Bank have recently launched

the Pharmacy Program healthy fruits and vegetables. Poor nutrition and obesity are designed to provide better access to

both challenges in the Rio Grande Valley. Low accessibility to
nutritious foods have caused serious health problems to residents
in some of our underserved communities. Our partnership with
the community garden has improved the quality of nutrition
and increased the consumption of fruits and vegetables for our
patients and our community.

Here in the Rio Grande Valley, Diabetes, as well as other diet-related diseases, is a serious issue. This innovative concept of “prescribing” fresh vegetables for her patients has been the vision of Dr. Cooper for years. In her practice of Internal Medicine, she has found that the most effective remedies are those which treat the root cause of an issue. Nearly 50 percent of South Texas residents are predisposed to diabetes,...

According to polls, 66% of all the New Year’s resolutions made in the country are associated with weight loss and improving one’s health. This is followed by finances and financial status, then family and friends. People are wanting to lose weight and live healthier lives. There’s no surprise there. We all know that there are several benefits to losing weight:

  • You feel better

  • You look better

  • Your overall health improves

  • You have greater resistance to illnesses

  • You have more energy and

  • Your mood and attitude improve

With all these benefits, why is it that we have such a high fail rate when it comes to our own health? Two of the most common reasons why people abandon their New Year’s resolutions are that they claim not to have enough time or “it’s too difficult.” Those are the two most frequently used excuses as to why people abandon their goals to live and eat healthier. What is even more interesting (or alarming as it were)...

As you know, October is breast cancer awareness month in the United States. Education on early detection and risk factors have created a noticeable increase in survival rates. Unfortunately, in order to continue increasing the survival rates, we all need to become advocates by educating ourselves and our loved ones. So do you know what steps to take and are you aware of the risk factors? Busy schedules and day to day duties can lead us to put aside the importance of our own health. Our own environment and behaviors are contributors to these factors such as smoking, drinking, and an unhealthy diet. While other factors such as age and race cannot be changed, we can however, minimize our chances by changing the way we eat, live and think. Behaviors and environment alterations can make a tremendous impact but cannot stand alone as an early detection plan. Early detection also consists of routine mammograms and cancer screenings. While many of us know the importance of mammograms, we might...

Despite overwhelming advancements in medical care our society is sicker than ever.  We may be living longer, but we’re riddled with illness and disease.  Nearly all sickness in industrialized countries is due to toxic build up in the body.  Often times, toxins, which are stored in fat cells, can slow our metabolism and cause weight gain. Cardiovascular disease, cancer, polycystic ovarian syndrome, infertility, gastroesophageal reflux disease, fatty liver, gallstones, osteoarthritis, stroke, lower back pain, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, dementia, sleep apnea, asthma and depression are just some of the illnesses associated with obesity.

Because toxins affect both the structure and the function of cells, they cause a myriad of health problems. Things like chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, autoimmune disorders like multiple sclerosis and lupus, migraines, premature aging, digestive problems like constipation, diarrhea or bloating, skin conditions, aches and pains, PMS and food...
