Are You Still Sticking to Your New Year's Resolution? Here Is Something to Think About.

February 10, 2017

According to polls, 66% of all the New Year’s resolutions made in the country are associated with weight loss and improving one’s health. This is followed by finances and financial status, then family and friends. People are wanting to lose weight and live healthier lives. There’s no surprise there. We all know that there are several benefits to losing weight:

  • You feel better

  • You look better

  • Your overall health improves

  • You have greater resistance to illnesses

  • You have more energy and

  • Your mood and attitude improve

With all these benefits, why is it that we have such a high fail rate when it comes to our own health? Two of the most common reasons why people abandon their New Year’s resolutions are that they claim not to have enough time or “it’s too difficult.” Those are the two most frequently used excuses as to why people abandon their goals to live and eat healthier. What is even more interesting (or alarming as it were) is the fact that 9 times out of 10, those same people had made the same resolutions some time before. Somehow, they let their dreams and their goals slip away from them. They lost sight of what they wanted out of life and ended up in a circle of complacency. As I counsel with others, whether they are my patients or just someone attending one of my seminars, I always mention that in order for them to succeed with their goals then a few things must happen. They must first assess their situation, then believe that there is a solution. The next step is taking action for change. Make this change a habit and live. You must believe, change and then live. Everything is impossible – until it’s done. Prior to the 1940's people worldwide died from simple infections such as pneumonia, infection of the bladder and others. Doctors then had no effective forms of treatments. However, after many years of research and studies Alexander Fleming discovered the magic cure, Penicillin. What was once seen as impossible is now simply a dream of the past. The discovery of Penicillin in the 1940's is seen as one of the greatest discoveries in the medical sciences. During his life, Leonardo da Vinci was considered a great artist and painter, but the 1800's was when the thousands of pages of writings and drawings that we collectively refer to today as Leonardo’s codices began to surface. With the rediscovery of these documents, da Vinci was recast as a Renaissance visionary who saw the possible in the world at a time when they were still considered “impossible” – things such as flight. Although it was envisioned in the 1800's, flight was still never achieved until December 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, when two brothers – Orville and Wilbur Wright – made the “impossible”

a reality. They became the first people to ever develop a machine that was able to achieve controlled, sustained flight with a pilot aboard. Today, we see planes flying overhead and we think nothing of it. However, only a hundred years ago, this feat was considered impossible”. There were many who tried to dampen the Wright brothers’ determination to achieve their goal with mocking tones and discouraging words. Relentlessly, they persisted until finally they made a breakthrough. Because of their resolve and tenacity to make their dreams and their goals a reality, they were able to do what everyone else was telling them couldn’t be done. As a woman of faith, I ask that you permit me to leave this quote from the Bible.

Matthew 19:26 says: “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, with men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”
